Questions & answers

FriendsSale is a free, private way to sell your things to people you know. Can’t find your answer? Email hello@friendssale.com.

Selling

How do I start a sale?
Tap Upload photos to start a sale, sign in with your email, and upload photos of everything you’re selling, all at once, straight from your phone. Prefer typing? A plain list like “grey armchair, kitchenaid mixer $80” works too.
What does the AI do with my photos?
It groups photos of the same thing into one listing (five shots of your couch become one item), works out what each item is, writes a short description, and looks up what similar things sell for used to suggest a starting price. It’s a head start, not the final word: you can rename items, rewrite descriptions, change prices, and move photos between items.
How long does bidding stay open?
You choose: anywhere from 1 to 30 days, or no end date at all. You can close bidding early, change the end date, or reopen it from your sale’s manage page.
What happens when bidding closes?
Everyone hears about it automatically:
  • Each winner gets one email listing what they won, the total, and your email address. Replying goes straight to you.
  • People who bid but didn’t win anything get a short note saying the sale has ended.
  • You get a summary of who won each item, what they bid, and what didn’t sell.
Can I keep my sale private?
Sales are never listed or searchable: only people with the link can find them. You can also add a password, change it later, and email the new password to everyone who’s already bid.
Someone I don't know is bidding. What can I do?
Every bidder gives their name with their first bid, and your manage page shows who bid what and when. You can block any email address from your sale, which also removes their bids.
Is there a limit on items or photos?
Up to 300 items per sale and 12 photos per item, each up to 4 MB. Big photos from your phone are shrunk automatically.

Bidding

Do I need an account to bid?
No. Enter your email and we’ll send you a sign-in link. The first time you bid we ask for your name so the seller knows who you are. If you’d rather not wait for emails, you can add a password on My stuff.
How does bidding work?
Everyone can see the current top bid, so you always know what to beat. Each new bid has to beat it by a small step ($1 for cheaper things, more for bigger ones). The highest bid when bidding closes wins the item.
Will I know if someone outbids me?
Yes. We email you when you’re outbid, and the sale page marks the items where you’re on top and where you’ve been outbid.
Can other bidders see my name or email?
No. Other bidders only see the top amount on each item. The seller sees names, emails and every bid on their sale.
I won something. Now what?
You’ll get an email listing what you won and the seller’s email address. Reply to it to sort out pickup and payment with the seller directly.

Money, privacy & safety

How do payment and pickup work?
Between you and the seller. FriendsSale never handles money, so pay however you both like: cash, Venmo, Zelle, whatever works.
Does FriendsSale cost anything?
No. It’s free for sellers and bidders. No fees, no commission, no ads.
Are my photos safe to share?
By default we remove location and camera data (EXIF) from every photo before anyone sees it, including our AI. That matters because phone photos often contain your home’s GPS location. Photos are stored privately and only shown on your sale.
What do you do with my email address?
We use it to sign you in and to send emails about sales you’re part of. We never sell it and never send marketing. The privacy page has the details.
I didn't get my sign-in email.
Check your spam or promotions folder for an email from hello@friendssale.com. Sign-in links expire after 30 minutes, so request a new one if it’s been a while.
